Weekly Artist Post

These images were made by street photographer Zun Lee. I have been thinking about focusing my final project on portraits and people around Richmond/VCU, so Lee's images are definitely inspiring. Lee obviously tries to photograph lots of different people, showing them in relationship to varying backgrounds. While still making the people the primary focus of each image, Lee portrays them in interesting ways that defy the usual frame of a centered subject and minimal background. Whether the subject is standing just off center, reflected in another part of the frame, or angled in an interesting way, Lee uses the composition of his portraits and frames in a way that differs from the status quo of portraiture.

His technical choices are also spot on, with each image reflecting wise choices of shutter speed, ISO, and F-stop. In witnessing the balance of these technical aspects, it's evident that Lee takes his time in making these portraits, being sure to have the best possible frame and combination of technical choices. In addition, his choice to photograph a wide range of people gives a sense of realism and diversity to his photographic projects, and allows the viewer to get an idea of the places and people he photographs.

Lee continues to show the benefit of not rushing through his image making process, a practice that is often difficult, especially when working with a stranger on the street. As I continue in making portraits this semester, I'll be taking a lot from what I've seen in Lee's images and will be sure to take my time with people in order to get the best image possible. Also, I will try to capture a wide variety of people, looking to photograph young people of varying races, ages, and backgrounds.
